Houston Texans Fire Head Coach Lovie Smith

The Houston Texans fired head coach Lovie Smith on Sunday night, per Ian Rapoport. Just like David Culley last year, Smith only got one year.

The Texans fired Smith with three years left on his deal and will begin searching for their fourth head coach in four years. General manager Nick Caserio will be looking to hire his third head coach in as many years.

2022 was Smith’s second year with the Houston Texans. In 2021 he served as the team’s defensive coordinator and had the title of associate head coach. Smith took over in 2022 after the team fired David Culley following the conclusion of the 2021 season, Culley lasted just one season as head coach.

Lovie Smith had plenty of head coaching experience before coming to Houston. From 2004 to 2012 he was the head coach of the Chicago Bears, and won coach of the year in 2005. He then spent two years as the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2014 to 2015. He then went to college coaching and served as the Illinois head coach from 2016 to 2020.

Smith led Houston to a 3-13-1 record this season, including a week 18 victory over the Colts to push Houston out of the first overall pick, leaving it for the Chicago Bears. As a result of this, Chicago now holds the keys to the 2023 NFL Draft. They could get a king’s ransom for the first overall pick and get all the resources they need to revamp their team, all thanks to Lovie Smith.

Lovie Smith Should Have All of Chicago’s Support This Weekend

Who knows where he ends up, maybe Lovie Smith retires from coaching or ends up somewhere else. What I do know is that he will never have to pay for a beer in Chicago ever again after today.
